HELLO!

I’m Amber, the pink-eyebrowed face behind BAMBER. I work in the Winchmore Hill shop + studio running all our pottery workshops, trying my best to keep the plants alive, hand-building (sometimes also throwing) pots and knitting + sewing my own clothes :-)

The BAMBER shop + studio opened on the 30th of November 2022, after I had been making pots from the shed at my childhood home for a few years, selling things I'd been making online and working part-time alongside.

The shed was freezing in winter and like an oven as soon as the sun came out, but I loved spending all day in there making pots and lamps and tiny sculptures.

Me + my cat would share a tiny chair while I was trimming mugs on the kick-wheel or pinching pots at the table, and I would run the kiln every few weeks after I'd built up enough of a collection to fill up all the shelves for a firing.

This is one of the first lamps I made, when I was deep in my cat-themed-pot era. I mean I'm still in it but maybe not as much as back then, I've branched out to ducks now too :-) quack quack

Lots of the things I like to make are themed around animals, plants and patterns (most often ducks or cats). I love to incorporate the natural colour of the clay in the glazing process, using wax to paint outlines or patterns on the pots which stops the glazes from covering in the firing. You can see this in the photo above from my old shed-studio - the darker terracotta colour is where the wax has been painted and the lighter colour is where the glaze will be painted.

I have now moved my work-space to the studio attached to the shop in Winchmore Hill, where I make and display my own work along with lots of other independent makers from around the UK. To see our list of current makers you can head to the studio page, linked below !
